Start your own street name thread on Twitter
Participants will make use of the new, innovative online tool which has been developed by An Dream Dearg in order to start their own street name thread on Twitter. This is a phased activity.
Míniú ar an ghníomhaíocht
Bainfidh rannpháirtithe leas as an uirlis úr, nuálach atá forbartha ag an Dream Dearg ar líne chun tús a chur lena snáithe féin sráidainmneacha ar Twitter. Is gníomhaíocht céimnithe é seo.
Céim 1: Comharthaíocht aonteangach
I dtús báire, glacfaidh rannpháirtithe grianghraf dá gcomhartha sráide aonteangach (nó má tá sé dátheangach cheana féin, comhartha aonteagach de chuid a dteaghlach). Tá orthu an grianghraf a phostáil ar Twitter leis an fhoscríbhinn;
- Comharthaíocht shráide i mBéarla amháin i mo shráid
- Mar Ghaeilgeoir óg, ba mhaith liom mo theanga a fheiceáil i spásanna poiblí!
- Beidh mé ag déanamh iarratais le mo chomhairle áitiúil (cuir club ar an chomhairle) ar son chomharthaíocht dhátheangach!
- Ba cheart duit amhlaidh a dhéanamh!
Céim 2: Iarratas seolta
Ansin, tabharfaidh rannpháirtithe cuairt ar www.dearg.ie agus rachaidh siad chuig an leathanach ‘Uirlisí’. Anseo, líonfaidh siad isteach na sonraí cuí don ríomhphost uathoibríoch a seolfar chuig a gcomhairle áitiúil. A luaithe is atá an t-iarratas déanta, is gá dóibh seat scáileáin a ghlacadh agus é a chur lena snáithe Twitter leis an fhorscríbhinn;
- Rinne mé iarratas ar son chomharthaíocht dhátheangach i mo shráid
- Tá mé ag dúil go mór le cluinsint ar ais ó mo chomhairle (cuir clib ar an chomhairle)
- Muna bhfuil sé déanta agat cheana féin, déan d’iarratas féin!
Céim 3: Freagra ón Chomhairle
Nuair a fhaigheann na rannpháirtithe freagra óna gcomhairle áitiúil maidir lena n-iarratas, is gá dóibh seat scáileáin a ghlacadh, ag cur sonraí pearsanta ar bith i bhfolach, agus é a chur lena snáithe Twitter leis an fhorscríbhinn;
- Fuair mé freagra ó (cuir clib ar an chomhairle) maidir le m’iarratas ar son chomhartha sráide dátheangach
- Thóg sé (líon ama) orthu teacht ar ais chugam
- Tá muid céim eile níos cóngaraí do chomharthaíocht shráide dhátheangach!
Céim 4: Comharthaíocht dhátheangach in airde
Má éiríonn leis an iarratas ar son chomhartha sráide dátheangach, is gá don rannpháirtí grianghraf a ghlacadh dóibh féin taobh leis an chomartha dátheangach. Is gá dóibh é seo a chur lena snáithe agus a bhforscríbhinn féin a scríobh.
Aidhm na gníomhaíochta
Is í aidhm na gníomhaíochta seo ná tuiscint na rannpháirtithe ar pholasaí reatha sráidainmneacha a gcomhairle áitiúil a mhéadú. Chomh maith leis seo, cuirfidh an ghníomhaíocht seo go mór le feiceálacht phoiblí na Gaeilge trí rannpháirtithe a spreagadh chun úinéireacht a ghlacadh ar a n-iarratas féin ar chomharthaí sráide dátheangacha.

Níor ceart go nglacfadh gach céim den ghníomhaíocht níos mó ná 10 mbomaite. Tá fad iomlán na gníomhaíochta ag brath go hiomlán ar an mhéid ama a ghlacann sé ar comhairlí áitiúla freagra a thabhairt ar na hiarratais.

Líonfaidh na rannpháirtithe féin-mheasúnú isteach, ag déanamh machnaimh ar na rudaí a d’fhoghlaim siad le linn na gníomhaíochta.
Explanation of the activity
Participants will make use of the new, innovative online tool which has been developed by An Dream Dearg in order to start their own street name thread on Twitter. This is a phased activity.
Phase 1: Monolingual signage
Participants will first take a photograph of their own (or if already bilingual, family members’) monolingual street sign. They must post this image with the caption;
- English-only street signage in my street
- As a young Irish speaker, I want to be able to see my language in public!
- I will be contacting my local council (tag your local council) and officially requesting bilingual signage!
- You should too!
Phase 2: Application sent
They will then visit www.dearg.ie and navigate their way to the ‘Tools’ page. Here, they will fill in the relevant details to be added to the automated email that will be sent to their respective local councils. Once they have successfully sent their application, they must take a screenshot and add it to their twitter thread with the caption;

Phase 3: Response received
When participants receive a response from their local council regarding their request, they must screenshot it, blurring out any personal information, and add it to the thread with the caption;
- I’ve just heard back from (tag local council) about my application for bilingual street signage
- It took them (insert time frame) to respond to my application and inform me of the next steps
- We are one step closer to having bilingual signage in my street!
Phase 4: Bilingual signage erected
If the application is successful and if a bilingual sign is erected, the participant must take a photograph of themselves beside the bilingual sign. They must add this to their thread and write their own caption!
Objective of the activity
The aim of this activity is to increase participants’ awareness of their local council’s current policy with regard to bilingual street signage. The activity also seeks to increase the visibility of the Irish language in public by encouraging participants to take ownership of their own applications for bilingual signs.
Duration
Each phase of the activity should take no longer than 10 minutes. The overall duration of the activity depends upon the time it takes local councils to issue their response to applications.
Self-assessment
Participants will then fill out a self-assessment, reflecting on what they have learned from the experience.
